The star was confronted by Variety with a pointed question about the decision to bring back legacy cast members for “Scream 7” after a string of high-profile exits. Referencing those returns in the wake of departures from Barrera herself, Jenna Ortega, and director Christopher Landon, the interviewer asked, “Did that seem scabby to you? Did it feel like those were people basically crossing the picket line?”
Her answer was immediate. “Oh, one hundred percent. I think they all are. And they have to live with that.” She then criticized the sequel’s creative direction, saying “the only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible.”
The production of “Scream 7” underwent a significant reset following her removal by Spyglass Media Group in late 2023, a decision tied to social media posts that reflected her political stance and were deemed unacceptable by the studio. The fallout reshaped the project, ultimately leading to the return of franchise mainstay Neve Campbell as the series pivoted back toward its original core.
Before that rupture, Barrera had been a central figure in “Scream VI,” which revitalized the long-running horror series both critically and commercially. Since then, she has shifted her focus toward independent film and theater, including a current stage run in “Titanique,” while continuing to take on new screen roles.
