The star admits he never had the time to fully dive into gaming culture, yet one character has stayed with him.

As Hollywood continues to circle video game adaptations with renewed urgency, one potential casting choice has surfaced from an unexpected place. In a recent conversation with Square Mile, Karl Urban has openly expressed interest in stepping into the world of “Red Dead Redemption,” singling out its iconic gunslinger as a role he would jump at without hesitation.

Karl Urban’s Surprising Connection to a Gaming Classic

Urban’s enthusiasm centers on one name, and he makes it clear: “I mean, come on, John Marston! I’d love to play that character.”

“Red Dead Redemption is one of my favourites. Red Dead is a fantastic game,” he said, even if his relationship with gaming never followed the typical path. “I didn’t really have too much of an opportunity to get that heavily invested in the gaming culture,” a gap that traces back to the early days of his career.

“I was an unemployed actor living in Sydney. I couldn’t afford those consoles,” he recalled. And when access was no longer the issue, time was. “I was so busy working on various projects around the world that I was never able to get into it.”

That stop-and-start connection makes his attachment to the title more specific. “From time to time, when I did get the rare opportunity, Red Dead was certainly one of the games that spoke to me,” he said, pointing to a lasting impression built in short bursts rather than long sessions.

Any potential adaptation would be drawing from a heavyweight. Released in 2010 by Rockstar Games, “Red Dead Redemption” became a defining title of its era, praised for its storytelling and moral complexity, with John Marston at the center of a fading American frontier.

Now, with “The Boys” nearing its end and “Mortal Kombat II” marking his next move, such long-distance admiration suddenly feels closer to the kind of role he’s openly calling for.
