According to Deadline, the actor has exited the film, though neither the studio nor those involved with the production have publicly disclosed a reason for his departure.
The development comes just months after Momoa’s casting was announced and does not appear to have altered the project’s overall trajectory. The adaptation remains in active development, with Sony reportedly beginning the search for a new leading star. Director Justin Lin, best known for revitalizing the “Fast and Furious” franchise, is still attached to helm the film.
Plot details have yet to be revealed, but the movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 10, 2027. The project is being produced by PlayStation Productions alongside Sony Pictures, continuing the companies’ efforts to bring some of gaming’s most recognizable properties to film and television.
The Video Game Phenomenon Behind Sony’s Next Adaptation
Sony’s determination to keep the project moving reflects the growing profile of the “Helldivers” brand. When Arrowhead Game Studios launched the original title in 2015, it attracted attention for its demanding cooperative gameplay, which required players to work together while navigating the constant threat of friendly fire.
Rather than focusing on individual heroes, the series built its identity around teamwork. Missions often forced players to coordinate airstrikes, deploy specialized equipment, and complete objectives in hostile territory while facing endless waves of enemies. The approach helped the game carve out a loyal audience in an increasingly crowded shooter market.
The franchise’s fictional universe also became part of its appeal. Set under the rule of Super Earth, the games blend large scale science-fiction warfare with satire, presenting a society devoted to spreading its version of managed democracy across the galaxy.
The property reached a much wider audience with the arrival of “Helldivers 2” in 2024. The sequel shifted from a top-down perspective to third-person combat and quickly became one of the year’s biggest gaming successes.
That surge in popularity helped pave the way for Sony’s film adaptation, which was officially announced in 2025. While the studio must now find a new lead following Momoa’s exit, the continued momentum behind the franchise helps explain why the project remains a priority ahead of its planned 2027 release.
