Despite her low profile, Gunning has been candid about her personal life. As widely known, she came out as a member of the LGBTQ community during an episode of the Reign with Josh Smith podcast on Monday, June 3. In the interview, she spoke openly about her journey with her sexual orientation:
“A big thing happened to me, and maybe I’ll just talk about it. I came out actually on November 2022. And that was a mega, mega thing for me because I, for so long, I’m surrounded by gays. Like, all my friends are gay. So it wasn’t that I was, like, repressing anything. It was just that I didn’t think I could be, and I still can’t articulate it in the best way.”
Gunning humorously shared that she finally realized, “I’m a big old gay.” The star described coming to terms with her sexuality as the most liberating experience, especially after sharing it with her family. Afterward, the actress felt such a sense of relief that she slept for 10 hours straight!
She also revealed that her “gay awakening” began when kissing Cate Blanchett in a National Theatre production of “When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other”. With her trademark wit, Gunning added, “I should have known then. All these signs from pre-‘Reindeer’ staring me in the face.”
