The Canadian actress, best known for projects such as “24,” “The Girl Next Door,” “House of Wax,” and “Happy Endings,” recently opened up about the personal decision that led her to spend four years away from television and film.

According to Deadline, Cuthbert discussed her hiatus while promoting Prime Video’s new romantic drama “Every Year After,” where she plays a key supporting character in the series.

Why Elisha Cuthbert Chose to Step Away From Acting

Speaking during an appearance on Today, Cuthbert explained that the decision came after the birth of her second child. Reflecting on that period of her life, she said, “After we had our second, I realized—because I had worked all through the first four years of our first child—and it was really hard to separate that mom from the working person I was.”

Rather than immediately returning to work, Cuthbert decided to focus entirely on being present at home. “So, when we had our second, I just felt like I didn’t want to waste any second of it and I didn’t want to be on set,” she explained.

Looking back on those years away from Hollywood, Cuthbert said she has no regrets about stepping back from her career. “I just felt like I needed to be at home with the kids and I enjoyed every minute,” she said.

That perspective began to change as her children grew older. Cuthbert explained that “they’re in school now full time,” which has transformed how she feels about returning to work. “I feel like I have the space and the energy and the heart to kind of leave them and do it,” she concluded.

Her return comes through “Every Year After,” Prime Video’s adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel “Every Summer After.” In the series, Cuthbert plays Sue Florek, the mother of Sam and Charlie Florek. The role marks her first major onscreen project since 2022.

Clara is about to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Writing Arts at the National University of Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In her role as a writer for Spoiler US, she covers movies, TV shows, streaming platforms, celebrities, and other topics of entertainment and general interest. Since 2021, she has been working as a film critic for Bendito Spoiler, Cinema Saturno, and Peliplat, attending festivals, conducting interviews, and regularly participating in cinematic debate podcasts. Her main focus of work is in the horror genre.
