More than six years after the release of "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Bruce Dern is sharing a behind the scenes story that briefly disrupted the rhythm of Quentin Tarantino’s set.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the veteran actor recalled a tense exchange between Tarantino and Brad Pitt while filming a scene for the director’s 2019 Hollywood drama, after an improvised line unexpectedly stopped production in its tracks.

A Small Improvisation Led to a Sharp Warning on Set

Dern, who played aging ranch owner George Spahn in the picture, revisited the moment while attending the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of the documentary “Dernsie.” The actor explained that during a scene opposite Pitt’s Cliff Booth character, he improvised the line, “I’m not really sure what’s going on,” while waking up in bed. According to Dern, the unscripted addition immediately changed the atmosphere on set.

As the cameras rolled, Pitt reportedly halted filming himself. Dern remembered the reaction from Tarantino being immediate and unusually severe. “The look on Quentin’s face, I mean, he was insanely grave,” Dern recalled, before repeating the director’s response: “Brad, what did you just do?” Pitt allegedly answered by explaining that he had stopped the camera because the line had not been part of the script.

Dern said Tarantino then made clear who controlled the flow of a scene. “Never again in your life will you ever cut a camera or you’ll be dead in this business. That’s my domain. Don’t stop behavior,” the director reportedly told Pitt. Filming eventually resumed.

Released in 2019, the film became one of Tarantino’s most acclaimed projects, earning 10 Academy Award nominations and winning Best Supporting Actor for Pitt. Interest in the world of Cliff Booth has continued in recent months as “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a follow up directed by David Fincher and written by Tarantino, moves toward its planned 2026 release.
