Brenda Fricker, Oscar-Winning ‘My Left Foot’ Star and ‘Home Alone 2’ Actress, Dies at 81

Irish actress Brenda Fricker, whose performances ranged from award-winning dramas to family favorites, has died at the age of 81.

According to the BBC, Fricker’s death was announced by her agent, Phil Belfield, who paid tribute to the actress by saying, “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” while also remembering her lasting impact on colleagues and audiences around the world.

Brenda Fricker Built an Extraordinary Career Across Film and Television

Fricker spent more than six decades working on stage and screen, earning widespread recognition for her ability to bring warmth, depth and authenticity to every role. In 1990, she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award after taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for portraying Christy Brown’s mother in “My Left Foot,” a performance that remains one of the defining achievements of her career.

Beyond her Oscar-winning work, Fricker reached millions of viewers through memorable performances in both Hollywood productions and British television. Many audiences remember her as the gentle Pigeon Lady in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” while television fans knew her as Megan Roach in “Casualty,” a role she returned to several times over the years. Her filmography also included “The Field,” “A Time to Kill,” “Angels in the Outfield,” “Veronica Guerin” and “Albert Nobbs.”

Fricker continued acting well into the later stages of her career. She appeared in the television adaptation of “Holding” in 2021 before taking on the lead role in the 2024 drama “The Swallow.” Throughout her career, she remained one of Ireland’s most respected performers, receiving honors such as the inaugural Maureen O’Hara Award at the Kerry Film Festival and being ranked among the greatest Irish film actors by The Irish Times.

Following news of her passing, Belfield reflected on the relationship they shared throughout the years. “I was honoured to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over,” he said. Fricker’s body of work, spanning acclaimed dramas, television series and beloved family picture, ensures her legacy will continue to resonate with audiences for generations.
