Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has paired together one of Hollywood's most experienced leading men with one of its biggest younger stars, but it turns out the generational gap extends beyond their careers.

Matt Damon was genuinely stunned after learning that Tom Holland had never seen “The Matrix,” one of the most influential science fiction films ever made.

Matt Damon Thinks Tom Holland Is About to Have a One of a Kind Movie Experience

While promoting “The Odyssey” with Complex, Damon was shocked by Holland’s admission that he had never watched “The Matrix.” Instead of expressing disbelief alone, the Oscar winner focused on what he considered the upside of the situation. His immediate reaction was, “Are you f*ing kidding me?” before adding, “I’m so jealous you get to see that for the first time.”

Damon also wondered whether the picture would land the same way for someone discovering it decades after its release. “I wonder if it’ll feel as groundbreaking to you as so much has been subsequently based on it,” he said, reflecting on the challenge of experiencing a hit whose innovations have been echoed across countless action and science fiction films.

The exchange quickly caught fans’ attention because “The Matrix” has long been regarded as a defining blockbuster, introducing visual techniques and storytelling ideas that reshaped modern action cinema. Holland’s confession surprised many movie lovers who assumed the actor had already crossed one of Hollywood’s most celebrated titles off his list.

The two actors currently share the screen in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which stars Damon as Odysseus and Holland as his son, Telemachus. The epic adaptation of Homer’s classic poem features an ensemble cast that also includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron, making the off-screen conversation between Damon and Holland another memorable moment in the film’s promotional tour.
