‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Still Has Unannounced Characters, According to Alan Cumming

Marvel’s carefully managed secrecy around "Avengers: Doomsday" may be even more extensive than fans realized.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Alan Cumming revealed that some cast members were hidden behind fake names in the script to prevent surprise returns from leaking before the studio was ready.

The remark arrives as speculation continues to swirl around several major Marvel figures who still have not been officially attached to the film despite its already massive ensemble.

Marvel’s Biggest Multiverse Event May Still Be Keeping Secrets

Cumming, who reprises Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler, hinted that even actors working on the production were struggling to keep track of who was actually involved. “Sometimes there were secret names in it because they didn’t want to let out this certain character was coming back,” he said, adding that the scripts substituted real identities with placeholders. “It was so confusing.”

The comment immediately reignited speculation around several notable absences from Marvel’s official cast rollout. While “Avengers: Doomsday” already includes returning MCU staples, the Fantastic Four, and multiple actors from Fox’s “X-Men” era, fans continue to question whether Marvel is still hiding appearances from characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Deadpool, or Wolverine ahead of a full trailer campaign.

Marvel Studios has already leaned heavily into secrecy throughout the film’s marketing strategy. The Russo brothers and Kevin Feige previously teased that additional cast reveals were still coming after the studio’s lengthy livestream unveiling in 2025. Even Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom was kept under wraps until Marvel’s Comic Con presentation, where the actor appeared onstage masked as the villain before revealing himself to the crowd.

“Avengers: Doomsday” marks the Russo brothers’ return to the MCU after “Avengers: Endgame” and reshapes what was originally planned as “The Kang Dynasty.” Following Jonathan Majors’ exit from the franchise, Marvel pivoted toward Doctor Doom as the central antagonist, with Downey stepping back into the universe in a completely different role.

The film brings together heroes from multiple realities, including the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, and Fox era X-Men characters such as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, and Cumming’s Nightcrawler.

The scale of the project has made secrecy part of the spectacle itself. Marvel spent much of the past year rolling out fragmented teaser footage, countdown streams, and staggered character reveals designed to keep audiences guessing well before the picture’s December 18 release.
