Film and television sets are built on contracts, schedules, and carefully planned continuity, but every so often, everything unravels when an actor simply walks away. Sometimes it’s due to explosive behind-the-scenes conflicts, sometimes personal tragedy or career-altering disagreements, and occasionally a not so quiet decision that no one expected until it was too late. Here are 10 moments when an actor exited a production, never to return.

Terrence Howard – Iron Man Franchise (2008)

Terrence Howard played James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man (2008) but exited the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a contract dispute over salary for the sequel. Howard claimed Marvel attempted to significantly reduce his pay, while the studio cited contractual issues. The role was recast with Don Cheadle, and Howard never appeared in the franchise again.

Katherine Heigl – Grey’s Anatomy (2005–2010)

Katherine Heigl’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy followed years of reported tensions, including public criticism of the show’s writing and her withdrawal from Emmy consideration. Her character, Izzie Stevens, was written out during season six, and although the door was left open narratively, Heigl never returned to the long-running medical drama.

Val Kilmer – Batman Forever Franchise (1995)

Val Kilmer chose not to return as Bruce Wayne after Batman Forever following reported clashes with director Joel Schumacher and ongoing tension on set. Kilmer was publicly labeled “difficult” during production, and scheduling disputes with The Island of Dr. Moreau sealed his exit. The role was recast with George Clooney, and Kilmer never returned to the franchise.

Shannen Doherty – Charmed (1998–2001)

Shannen Doherty exited Charmed after reported backstage conflicts and escalating tensions with both cast and producers. Her character, Prue Halliwell, was killed off at the end of season three, making any return impossible within the show’s continuity. Doherty never reappeared on the series, and the role was replaced by Rose McGowan in a major creative reset.

Harvey Keitel was cast as Captain Willard and began filming on location in the Philippines, but creative differences quickly emerged between the actor and director Francis Ford Coppola. After only a short time on set, Coppola replaced Keitel with Martin Sheen, restarting production from scratch. Keitel never rejoined the film, which went on to become a landmark of American cinema.

Chevy Chase – Community (2009–2014)

Chevy Chase’s time on Community ended after repeated clashes with creator Dan Harmon and mounting tensions with the cast and crew. His behavior on set and the leak of a profane voicemail led to a mutual decision to part ways during season four. Chase never returned to the series, even as the show continued without him.

Jean-Claude Van Damme – Predator (1987)

Jean-Claude Van Damme was hired to play the Predator creature and even began filming in the original suit. He reportedly became frustrated with the role’s limited visibility and physical demands, leading to creative conflicts with the production team. Van Damme exited early, was replaced by Kevin Peter Hall, and never returned to the project.

Mischa Barton exited The O.C. at the end of season three after expressing exhaustion with the pressures of fame and the show’s demanding schedule. Terrence Stamp – The Phantom Menace Sequel Trilogy (1999)
