The countdown to the Oscars has already begun, and this morning the stars who will be competing in the 2024 edition were finally revealed. Some have become nominees for the first time, but others have been completely ignored, causing a great uproar among many viewers who were following the live broadcast minute by minute.

One of the biggest snubs was directed at Margot Robbie, who is not nominated as Actress in a Leading Role for bringing Barbie to life in the film directed by Greta Gerwig. That’s right, the actress only managed to secure a nomination as a producer. This has caused a huge wave of memes and various reactions on social media, with many supporting the star.

It’s not the first time this year that various award ceremonies have surprised everyone with different snubs. However, it’s inevitable. Not everyone was going to pass the test, as there could only be a select number of nominees in each of the categories. The snubs are plentiful and here, check out all of these and the biggest surprises…

Margot Robbie was ignored in the Actress in a Leading Role category

The biggest snub of the 2024 Oscars was starred by Margot Robbie. Despite being nominated as a producer in the Best Picture category, she was completely ignored in the Actress in a Leading Role list. This not only caused a huge surprise but also a lot of indignation on social media, especially since Ryan Gosling managed to secure a spot in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The outrage is total, and it’s not just the fans or viewers of the film who have spoken out against these nominations; many journalists and critics have also expressed their opinions on this. Maureen Lee Lenker was one of them and wrote in Entertainment News:

“While Ryan Gosling’s Ken generated a million memes, and America Ferrera delivered the film’s grand speech, it was Robbie who grounded Barbie and gave her heart. All of this, along with a cavalcade of Barbie moments on the red carpet, somehow wasn’t enough for the Academy to recognize that Robbie elevated Barbie from mere plastic to cinematic gold”.

Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Directing

Although Barbie received a total of eight nominations, Greta did not secure a place in the iconic Directing category. The producer, director, and actress still has a chance to win another golden statuette for Best Picture, a category she shares with other colleagues, including Margot herself, who was a producer of the film.

Once again, there are more men than women in the Best Director category, but slowly the Academy seems to be reversing this trend, although the 2024 edition was not one of those moments. Gerwig not only turned the typical Barbie story into an anthem of empowerment for all women, especially the young ones, but she also turned it into a box office success.

Maureen Lee Lenker also shared her opinion on the official Entertainment News page, and when it came to discussing the terrible snub that involved the director, she stated, “Perhaps Gerwig can console herself with her own words: Always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged”.

Charles Melton, once again ignored

Charles Melton is one of the actors who has been struggling the most when it comes to nominations. It’s not the first time he has been ignored, and this has left a quite bitter taste. Many have criticized the organizations, especially those who decide who is nominated and who is not, as the young actor’s work in May December was extraordinary.

Critics have praised his portrayal of Joe Yoo, a husband with issues who must grapple with the intense foundations he carved for his eventual marriage. However, industry award ceremonies like the SAG and the BAFTA had different plans for him, as he did not make it onto any of the lists.

Julianne Moore was left out

Yes, Julianne Moore was left out of the Best Supporting Actress category for May December, and this has caused quite a surprise. The acclaimed star is the one who brought Gracie to life in this story, which was inspired by true events. Despite starting the season with strong critical support, it was not enough to secure a spot at the 2024 Oscars.
