The iconic character of Zorro has come back with an homonymous series that is currently the sixth most watched show on Prime Video in the US, according to FlixPatrol. It’s a Spanish production, starring Miguel Bernadeau, known from the Netflix’s series “Elite.”
Alongside Bernadeau, who plays Diego de La Vega, Mexican actress Renata Notni stars as his childhood sweetheart and love interest, Lolita Marquez. The series premiered on Jan. 19th, and it has already become a hit in the US and in Latin America. It arrives in Spain on Jan. 25th.
In South America, the show, produced by Secuoya Studio, is currently the ninth most watched on the platform. The series was directed by Javier Quintas, who is known for being behind the camera on titles such as Money Heist (2017), Vive cantando (2013) and El Príncipe (2014).
Prime Video: Zorro breath new life on the classic tale
In an interview with Variety, Bernadeau and Notni talked about why this remake of the original series will appeal to new generations, as well as the people who grew up with the character. This time, the series follows Diego de La Vega, who returns to California to avenge the death of his father, while he assumes the identity of the vigilante.
According to Bernardeu, they mix “action with comedy and it does feel epic,” but the series also explores “universal topics,” such as growing up and maturing. “Before, Zorro used to be played by people who were older than Diego was supposed to be. Now, we really see his coming-of-age,” he added.
Meanwhile, Notni puts an emphasis on the “empowerment” of the female characters of the series, saying that “women in the show are very powerful. We are not expecting anyone to come and save us anymore. We are the heroes of our lives.”
On the other hand, Dalia Xiuhcoatl plays Native American fighter Nah-Lin, who is convinced he has stolen what was rightfully hers. Paco Tous as Bernardo, Emiliano Zurita as Captain Monasterio, Peter Vives, Elia Galera, Andrés Almeida, and Rodolfo Sancho also complete the cast.
