Apparently, being a beloved series by viewers is no longer a reason for Netflix to keep a show. It has been confirmed that the platform has said goodbye to a production starring Michelle Yeoh: The Brothers Sun.

The dramedy followed a gangster from Taipei who had settled into his life as a ruthless assassin but must go to Los Angeles to protect his mother and younger brother after his father was shot by a mysterious assassin.

The actress, who won an Oscar in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All at Once, portrayed Eileen Sun, one of the main roles, but she wasn’t the only talented one in the cast; she was joined by Justin Chien and Sam Song Li.

Why did Netflix cancel The Brothers Sun?

After a successful eight-episode season, Netflix decided not to renew The Brothers Sun for a second season. The platform made this decision because it did not reach the threshold of 7 million weekly views that is considered necessary.

The Economic Times reported that despite the success the television show had, it had low viewership, making it “economically unsustainable” for the streaming giant, leading to its unexpected cancellation.

Despite fans expressing their disappointment on social media, as they were really eager to see where the story would go, the show’s co-creator Brad Falchuk confirmed that he will continue working with the service.

Amy Wang and Byron Wu joined Brad in bringing the action-packed dramedy to life, which has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of “Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Comedy Programming”.
