Although all movies by Adam Sandler are worldwide blockbusters, it can certainly be said that “Happy Gilmore” is one of the most underrated ones. Recognizing the value of the original, Netflix will be producing an upcoming sequel to the golf comedy.
The film was made a few years before Sandler founded Happy Madison Productions, the company that allowed him to have full control of his creations. Thus, it’s quite probable that this continuation will have more of his trademark style than the original, which he only co-wrote with Tim Herlihy.
In the first installment, the “Big Daddy” actor plays Happy Gilmore, a hockey player with severe anger issues who suddenly discovers he has a natural talent for golf. Shortly afterwards, he begins to play on the golf tour circuit to earn enough money to save his grandmother’s house.
When will ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ be released?
Back in March, Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald said in a radio interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan that Adam Sandler not only showed him the script for “Happy Gilmore 2,” but also that it was completed! Now that Netflix has bought the rights to the film, we can expect it to begin filming soon, with a possible release by the end of this year or the beginning of 2025.
This will only happen if the production stages progress quickly, which may be unlikely considering that Adam Sandler has two upcoming projects. One of them is a film with Noah Baumbach, which has not yet confirmed its plot but is slated to be a dramedy starring Riley Keough, George Clooney, and Laura Dern, among many other stars.
However, according to IMDb, this project is in post-production, so it’s not taking much of Sandler’s time at this point. The one that is actually slowly starting to be developed is a film in collaboration with the Safdie brothers, a comedy special for Netflix set in the sports world that is currently facing some issues to move forward.
Also, if Sandler discussed the project with McDonald, it’s likely that the latter will also return for the sequel. Then, the continuation would also need to accommodate McDonald’s schedule, with his two upcoming projects and the potential return for another season of “Hacks” as Marty.
All things considered, with the script already finished and Netflix confirmed to be involved in the project, “Happy Gilmore 2” likely won’t take more than a year to hit streaming. In the meantime, you can enjoy Sandler in “Spaceman,” his sci-fi film that was released on the platform in March.
