The story of a robot learning how to belong in the wilderness isn’t finished yet. According to TheWrap, as shared by DiscussingFilm on X, a follow up to “The Wild Robot” is officially moving forward, with the studio bringing back key creative voices while expanding the team behind the camera.
Animation Veterans Step In to Guide the Sequel
Development on “The Wild Robot 2” is underway with directors Troy Quane and Heidi Jo Gilbert taking the helm. Both filmmakers come with deep experience in animation, bringing backgrounds that combine visual storytelling with character driven narratives.
Quane is perhaps best known for co directing “Nimona,” the critically acclaimed Netflix animated film that earned widespread praise for its energetic style and emotionally layered story.
Gilbert’s connection to the franchise runs even deeper, since she served as head of story on the first picture. Her credits also include work on projects like “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “Sing.”
Just as crucial to the sequel’s identity is the return of writer Chris Sanders, who penned the original film. Sanders has long been one of animation’s most reliable storytellers, with credits that include “Lilo and Stitch,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “The Croods.”
Released in 2024, “The Wild Robot” adapted the bestselling novel by Peter Brown and quickly became one of DreamWorks Animation’s most acclaimed recent projects. Critics praised its painterly visual style and its gentle, philosophical story about Roz, a service robot who must adapt to life on a remote island and learn what it means to coexist with the natural world.
