There are few classics in the history of cinema that have truly made a significant change, but one of them is undoubtedly The Passion of the Christ, as it revived global interest in religious cinema like never before.
Twenty years after the grand premiere, Mel Gibson announced that the sequel is on its way and closer than we think. The star was the one who directed the first installment and will reprise the same role for part two.
So far, the project has been titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Chapter I“, so if everything goes well, there could be more than one continuation, aimed at further depicting Jesus.
Who is the cast of The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection?
The continuation of the religious film nominated for three Oscars will feature great talents from the industry, and one who couldn’t be missing is Jim Caviezel, who will once again don the robe of Jesus for the sequel.
Alongside him will be Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Francesco De Vito as Peter, so there will be several reunions. When the second installment was announced, not many believed that the lead actor would actually return.
This is because he didn’t have the best experience during the filming of the original in 2004, as he faced several difficulties, such as experiencing sunburn and other health issues due to the intensity of the shoot.
It was filmed under very harsh conditions in Italy, and Jim was exposed to very cold temperatures and long working hours. Additionally, during one of the crucifixion scenes, he suffered a shoulder injury.
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection release date
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Chapter I was set to premiere on April 18, 2025. However, the title has been delayed, and it is now likely to arrive in 2026, as filming will begin early next year.
Currently, the project is in the pre-production phase, and it has been reported that Mel Gibson (Braveheart, Mad Max and The Patriot) has started looking for specific locations to set up the filming sets.
What will The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection be about?
There is still no official synopsis for the sequel to The Passion of the Christ, but the director has spoken about the script and assured that he has spent the last 20 years trying to bring it to life, finally achieving it in 2023.
The actor also worked closely with Randall Wallace on the script and recently confessed that “they have gone through at least six script drafts“, which were reviewed and finalized about a year ago.
However, Gibson has noted that the film is quite ambitious, as the narrative structure will not be linear, but will encompass events from the present, past and future of Jesus, aiming to focus on what happened after the resurrection.
The story’s approach would explore some hypothetical situations, trying to adapt the Christian concept of the “Descent of Christ into Hell“. It is also expected to delve into some mystical concepts of religion.
