When “The Last Witch Hunter” hit theaters in 2015, it introduced audiences to a dark and sprawling fantasy world where immortality came at a price. Directed by Breck Eisner, the film starred Vin Diesel as Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter tasked with stopping a plague unleashed by the vengeful Witch Queen.
Drawing inspiration from Diesel’s own Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, the movie combined high-stakes action with supernatural intrigue, as Kaulder navigated centuries-old curses, powerful witches, and a secretive organization called the Axe and Cross, all while confronting the shadows of his own past.
Despite receiving generally unfavorable reviews from critics, “The Last Witch Hunter” became a notable presence in the fantasy-action genre. Now, a decade after its initial release, fans have more reason to be excited: a sequel is in development, promising a return to the world of Kaulder and his immortal battle against the forces of darkness.
A New Chapter Begins in the World of ‘The Last Witch Hunter’
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Lionsgate has officially set the wheels in motion for a sequel to “The Last Witch Hunter,” with Vin Diesel returning to reprise his role as Kaulder. Michael Caine is also attached to return as Dolan, the loyal priest and centuries-long ally.
The original “Last Witch Hunter” earned $146.9 million worldwide at the box office, and while critics were mixed, the picture has remained popular with audiences, resurfacing this year as one of the five most-viewed movies on Netflix. Its continued success in streaming has made it a prime candidate for a follow-up.
Advancements in filmmaking technology are also expected to allow the sequel to be produced more efficiently, delivering bigger spectacle at a lower cost. Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, highlighted the enduring enthusiasm surrounding Kaulder’s world, saying, “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and re-watch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.”
Fogelson added that working with Diesel again was a natural fit. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.” With these pieces in place, fans of the original can expect Kaulder’s next supernatural battle to hit screens sooner rather than later.
