All about ‘The Paperboy’
More than a decade ago, Zac Efron took on one of his first standout roles in “The Paperboy.” This production was pivotal for him, marking a departure from the teen idol image he cultivated as Troy Bolton in “High School Musical.”
Set in the early seventies, the story follows journalist Ward Jansen (McConaughey), who returns to his Florida hometown to investigate the case of Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack), sentenced to death for killing a corrupt local sheriff in 1969. Ward is aided by his brother Jack (Zac Efron) and Charlotte, an attractive woman (Nicole Kidman) who has fallen in love with the condemned man without ever having seen him.
Jack is immediately drawn to Charlotte and pursues a relationship with her, but she plays hard to get. Their romance mirrors the themes of intergenerational relationships explored in “A Family Affair,” but with a more dramatic tone.
According to JustWatch, you can stream “The Paperboy” on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, Hoopla, The Roku Channel (free with ads), Redbox, Crackle, Popcornflix, VIX, Freevee, and Xumo.
