As speculation intensified over the lengthy development of “The Batman: Part II,” some fans theorized that director Matt Reeves was secretly filming the second and third installments of his planned trilogy at the same time. Gunn has now made it clear that is not the case.
James Gunn Shuts Down Speculation About Two Batman Sequels Filming Together
The rumor gained traction online as “The Batman: Part II” spent years in development, with repeated release date changes prompting fans to search for an explanation. One of the most popular theories suggested Reeves was preparing an ambitious back-to-back production for the second and third films. That speculation reached Gunn on Threads, where a fan asked him whether the reports were true. His response left little room for interpretation: “I can deny.”
The sequel is now in production in London after an extended writing process that Reeves has previously described as deliberate, with the filmmaker choosing to refine the screenplay before cameras rolled.
The upcoming picture brings Robert Pattinson back as Bruce Wayne alongside returning cast members Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell. New additions include Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry. Set after the events of the first film and Gotham City’s devastating flood, the story will once again follow Batman as he investigates another mystery tied to the city’s corruption.
Released in 2022, “The Batman” introduced Pattinson’s version of the Dark Knight during his second year as Gotham’s vigilante, blending detective noir with a conspiracy centered on the Riddler. The movie earned strong reviews and more than $772 million worldwide, laying the foundation for what Reeves has envisioned as a standalone Batman trilogy. “The Batman: Part II” is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on Feb. 18, 2028, with a third installment planned to conclude the saga.
