Once again, Richard Linklater brings to life a likable, easygoing character and his ordinary existence. However, this time, that’s just a façade. In his latest romantic black comedy, he delves into the life of Gary Johnson, a college professor who secretly works as a tech expert for the New Orleans Police Department, setting up microphones, cameras, and other electronic gear to help catch criminals.

As if his double existence wasn’t dangerous enough, Gary is thrust into the role of fake hitman, tasked with gathering incriminating statements from people looking to hire him for murder. Initially reluctant, he surprisingly grows to enjoy this unusual assignment, perhaps a bit too much.

Linklater’s direction is exquisite, and Glen Powell showcases his full range of talent like he never did before. Audiences have embraced this film based on a true story so much that they’re already asking for a sequel. Well, here are the chances.

Wil there be a ‘Hit Man’ sequel?

Given that the comedy has just premiered, there’s understandably no news about another installment yet. However, examining Linklater and Powell’s tendencies regarding sequels might offer some insight into the possibility of a “Hit Man 2.”

Aside from the “Before” trilogy, Linklater isn’t known for expanding the universes he creates. It’s not that he dislikes sequels – he recently mentioned he’d consider directing a “Rock of Ages” one if Jack Black returned – but rather, he tends to conclude his stories within a single film.

However, when we look at Glenn Powell’s filmography, we might feel more optimistic. From his debut in “Spy Kids 3: Game Over” to his role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” it’s evident he’s comfortable with second parts and has been involved in many.

Surely, it’s clear to both of them understand that “Hit Man” holds great potential for further installments. There’s a period at the end of the picture not shown to the public that could be explored, and Gary Johnson is the kind of character audiences would love to see in various adventures.

All things considered, if a second title were to happen, it might be some time before we hear about it. Both Linklater and Powell have busy schedules, especially Powell, who is set to star in several major films in 2024 and beyond.
