‘The Iron Claw’ arrived in cinemas back in December and, despite being snubbed by the Oscars, the film has been well-received by audiences and critics. While it is still available to watch in some theaters, the sports drama is finally available to watch at home.
Written and directed by Sean Durkin, the movie will arrive on the Max platform on May 10, 2024. In the meantime, you can find it available for digital purchase on video-on-demand platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Vudu.
The title comes to the service as part of A24’s new Pay 1 agreement with the platform. So, this means that after the new A24 movies complete their run in theaters, it will be available on the Warner Bros. Discovery platforms (also includes HBO and Cinemax) for a period of time.
‘The Iron Claw’: A must-watch sports drama
‘The Iron Claw’ tells the story of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich and the Von Erich family. It stars Efron as Kevin, with the rest of the cast consisting of Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany, and Lily James.
In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, Durkin revealed that the film was a “lifelong” dream project and what he wanted to “both celebrated the family, celebrated wrestling, celebrated this great moment in their life, and showed their brotherhood and their love, but also examined and challenged wrestling and these sort of false ideals of manliness.”
The movie was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, and it received positive reviews. Critics praised the performances of the cast, particularly Efron’s, as well as the wrestling scenes and how the film explores toxic masculinity. However, some felt that it was too focused on the tragic elements of the story.
Durkin explained that he wanted to explore “masculinity and sort of how we express in a family or don’t express and don’t communicate, and all this sort of repression.” He also said that the story felt “Shakespearean in a lot of ways,” and that he tried to play with that.
