During a recent interview with Esquire, the actor pointed to “Adolescence” breakout Owen Cooper as a young performer who could one day take over the role, adding another chapter to the teenager’s remarkable rise through the industry.
Tom Holland Thinks Owen Cooper Could Be Spider-Man’s Future
Holland was asked who he would choose as a possible successor to the web slinger and did not hesitate to mention Cooper, the 16-year-old actor whose performance in Netflix’s “Adolescence” turned him into one of the most talked about young stars in entertainment.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome,” Holland said. He also described the actor as “super talented” and “the talk of the town right now.”
The endorsement is notable given the unusual connection between the two actors. Before landing his breakout role, Cooper revealed that Holland’s performance in “The Impossible” inspired him to pursue acting. Just a few years later, Cooper found himself earning international attention for his screen debut and receiving some of the industry’s most prestigious awards.
Cooper became a sensation with his portrayal of Jamie Miller, a teenager accused of murder in the acclaimed Netflix limited series. The drama earned widespread praise for its performances and ambitious filmmaking style, with each episode unfolding in a single continuous take. Cooper’s work quickly made him one of the most celebrated young actors of his generation.
His awards haul has been equally impressive. Following “Adolescence,” he became the youngest male winner of a Primetime Emmy Award, while also setting age records at the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTA Television Awards.
For now, Holland remains firmly attached to the “Spider-Man” franchise and will next return as Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 31. Still, his comments suggest that if Marvel and Sony eventually look for a new generation of heroes, Cooper is already on the radar of the actor who has worn the suit for nearly a decade.
