Long before she made her debut in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the actress says she had never watched an “X-Men” film and knew the character only through years of online casting rumors. That changed after a meeting with Marvel Studios leaders Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, who introduced her to the role that would become one of the franchise’s biggest additions.
Sadie Sink Says Marvel Introduced Her to Jean Grey
Before Marvel reached out, Sink says her connection to Jean Grey was practically nonexistent. Although fans had spent years speculating that she could eventually play the iconic mutant, she admitted to Variety, “Honestly, I knew nothing about her.” The online rumors were familiar, but, as she recalled, “that was all I knew about her.”
She also revealed that her introduction to the character did not come through the long-running film franchise. “I had never seen ‘X-Men,’ so I was just like unfamiliar,” she said, explaining that everything changed once Marvel Studios arranged a conversation with Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito. According to Sink, the pair “called me, set up a meeting, and just told me about the character, about her role in ‘Spider-Man.'”
That meeting led her to begin exploring Jean Grey’s comic book history on her own. The more she learned, the more convinced she became that the opportunity was the right fit. “Then I did more research on her, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is a no-brainer!'” she recalled.
Sink also spoke about what makes the character so exciting to portray. “She’s such an iconic figure in X-Men and in comics,” she said, adding, “I’m very excited to bring my iteration of her to life.”
