Glen Powell is one of those celebrities we’ve seen a lot of, yet we still want to see more. And we certainly will. With his recent rise in recognition for starring in “Top Gun: Maverick” and working alongside Sydney Sweeney in “Anyone but You,” he has a fascinating slate of upcoming projects.
On TV, he became a familiar face with Ryan Murphy’s 2015 comedy-horror series “Scream Queens.” In cinema, he made his debut at age 13 in “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over,” alongside Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone.
In a recent interview, Powell reflected on his past work and expressed regret over one of his earlier performances, which happens to be one of his most well-known roles. Here’s what he said.
Glen Powell spoke on his performance in ‘Hidden Figures,’ and was quite critical of himself
The actor from “Set It Up” recently appeared on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, where he recalled his initial reaction to seeing his portrayal of astronaut John Glenn in the 2016 biographical drama film “Hidden Figures.” As noted by The Hollywood Reporter:
“I remember watching [Hidden Figures] for the first time on the Fox lot — and this was before all the effects were done, the music was in [and] the sound design — and I literally left the movie, and I puked in the bushes.”
He expressed his anxiety over potentially misrepresenting the real-life figure, particularly given John Glenn’s status as the third American in space and the first to orbit the Earth, completing three circuits in 1962. Additionally, he feared this might influence how critics perceived the narrative about the team of female African-American mathematicians.
However, upon viewing the final cut with all elements in place, he found some relief. In his own words, “Once the music gets in there, it starts being polished a little bit.”
Certainly, those who have watched the movie recognize Powell’s excellent performance in his supporting role. This is evidenced by the numerous opportunities “Hidden Figures” afforded him, including roles in 16 different movies and series, with 5 upcoming projects.
