Britney Spears was taken into custody Wednesday evening in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence, Variety informed. Officers from the California Highway Patrol detained the singer at roughly 9:30 p.m., and she was formally processed several hours later, shortly after 3 a.m. on Thursday. Public records show that she has since been released and is due back in court on May 4.

The incident once again places the pop star at the center of a legal headline, years after the end of her conservatorship reshaped both her autonomy and her public narrative.

Britney Spears’ Personal Struggles and Legal History

Britney Spears’ recent legal issue arrives after nearly two decades of highly publicized personal challenges. In the mid-2000s, intense media scrutiny surrounded her relationships, divorce from Kevin Federline, and custody disputes involving their two sons. In 2008, following a series of incidents that raised concerns about her mental health and well-being, a Los Angeles court placed her under a conservatorship that granted her father, Jamie Spears, and later other court-appointed figures control over her finances and certain personal decisions.

The conservatorship remained in place for more than 13 years, during which Spears publicly stated in court that she felt the arrangement was restrictive and harmful. Her testimony in 2021 drew widespread attention and fueled the #FreeBritney movement, which had formed years earlier in support of her autonomy. In November 2021, a judge formally terminated the conservatorship.

Since then, Spears has continued to face personal transitions, including her divorce from Sam Asghari and ongoing public scrutiny of her social media activity and private life. While she has described the end of the conservatorship as a turning point, her legal matters and personal challenges have remained a recurring focus of media coverage.
