“We’ve basically absolved [Netflix] of the responsibility to make us their flagship show. We’re saying, ‘Just put us on the service. We’re going to sign a very short deal with you guys and see how it does.’ That way at Netflix, you’re not taking an oversized, outsized risk.”



“In the event that it’s a blowout success, you might see a bigger scope for season two. In the event that it’s a moderate success, we might write it for a smaller scope, but at least we’re in the driver’s seat now as to whether we get to keep making this show.” Duplass added.



So, if the production gains popularity on Netflix—something likely given the current trend for young adult titles—it stands a much better chance of renewal. In this case, the creators will also have a significant say in its future. Duplass told Deadline that, during that time, he found himself “spending a lot of time alone…thinking about what had gone on in my life that had led me to a place that I just don’t feel myself anymore”. This led to the creation of Penelope as a kind of avatar for his own experiences. The producer later expanded on his creative process in an Instagram post.



“(Its) a show for and about young adults. About the way life could be if we simplified things. And then i realized that out title character PENELOPE was not just a teenaged girl. She was all of us, trying to find a peace, simplicity, and happiness that we have lost”.



The title was co-created with Mel Eslyn, producer of the 2022 dark comedy “Biosphere”. According to Duplass, Eslyn brought much of her own 16-year-old self and a female perspective to the story. “Well, [you] try to get sleep, which I didn’t. There’s a lot of research out there, there’s a lot of footage and documentary. It’s pretty much been very well documented, his sort of rise into what we see today. And to me, it’s like playing an instrument. You sit at the piano, you get better at it with practice, and eventually you can just kinda do it in your sleep” Stan shared on the Today show.



Stan revealed to Variety that he had saved 130 media of Trump’s mannerisms on his phone and studied 562 more from the 1970s to the present day to master the former president’s speech patterns and improvise like him. He also gained fifteen pounds for the role to fully embody the character.



Though the production hasn’t hit theaters yet, his preparation seems to have paid off. “The Apprentice” debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it received an 11-minute standing ovation.
