<p>In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Duplass explained that his company, Duplass Brothers Productions, crafted a strategy to sell the rights of the indie series <strong>while retaining control, including the decision on a second season.</strong> He stated:</p>

<p>Duplass told Deadline that, during that time, he found himself <em>“spending a lot of time alone…thinking about what had gone on in my life that had led me to a place that I just don’t feel myself anymore”</em>. <strong>This led to the creation of Penelope as a kind of avatar for his own experiences.</strong> The producer later expanded on his creative process in an Instagram post.</p>



<p><em>“(Its) a show for and about young adults. About the way life could be if we simplified things.
