The first season of Netflix‘s “Unstable” ended in utter chaos, with Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) setting fire to his friend-turned-rival Jean’s (Christina Chang) car. Season 2 dives right into the aftermath of that fiery decision, focusing on Ellis as he prepares to face the repercussions in his uniquely eccentric style.

In the opening four minutes of the new season, Ellis is seen role-playing a prison scenario in his basement with his therapist, Leslie (Fred Armisen). His son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) can’t help but point out the absurdity of it all.

However, Prison Ellis is short-lived. Ellis’s business partner Anna (Sian Clifford) manages to pull some strings, helping him avoid jail time. But the company isn’t out of trouble yet. Both Anna and the board believe Dragon needs a new face. So, when is Season 2 coming out?

When is Season 2 of Unstable coming out?

Season 2 of ‘Unstable’ is coming to Netflix on August 1, 2024.

What has Lowe said about Season 2 of ‘Unstable’?

Speaking about Season 2, especially the time of his character in prison, he said he always “wanted to do a gritty, hard-hitting Midnight Express-type prison drama, and this is as close as I think I’ll ever get to come as an actor,” Rob Lowe told Tudum. “To prepare for it, like my heroes such as Daniel Day-Lewis, I stayed in that prison set for at least 10 or 15 minutes before we shot it.”

Meanwhile, John Owen talked about the possibility of his character taking over the company. “What’s so funny about that journey is the quest to pull away and the innate gravitational pull back in,” he told Tudum. “We really exaggerate it with Jackson and Ellis. There’s this shining moment where it seems like we’re going to see Jackson in his true form, having some space. What’s so fun about Season 2 is how we max out the ways Ellis could pull him back into his world in the cruelest ways possible.”

Is there a new character in ‘Unstable’ Season 2?

Yes, the opening scenes of Season 2 also introduce Iris Apatow as Anna’s stepdaughter, Georgia, who becomes an intern at Dragon. This addition helps humanize Anna and provides a glimpse into her life outside of Ellis.

“There was a desire to see Anna humanized a bit more, to see her backstory and get more of a glimpse into what her life is outside of Ellis — which, there isn’t much life outside of Ellis for her, explains John Owen.

Another addition is Lamorne Morris from “Fargo,” who plays another biotech creator, further stoking the rivalry between Ellis and Jackson.
