The plot itself doesn’t represent 100% what happened in the first adaptation, which debuted on the big screen in 2011, but it has its own timeline and even differs in some parts from the original book, written by David Nicholls in 2009.
According to IMDb, the official synopsis ensures, “Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow, they must go their separate ways”.
Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod are the ones who bring the main characters to life, accompanied by other talented actors. The list is quite long, but those who have stood out the most include Amber Grappy, Brendan Quinn, Jonny Weldon, Eleanor Tomlinson, Tim McInnerny and John Macmillan, among others.
How did the series differ from the book?
One Day, the new Netflix romantic comedy-drama, is based on both the book of the same name and the film that was released a few years ago and is now a romantic classic.
However, the miniseries differs in some aspects from its original story. TV Line compiled scenes that have undergone significant modifications in the series adaptation, with some of the most notable being:
The Origin of Their Story:
- In the book: The knowledge of their future relationship is revealed in the final pages, so not much is known about the magical encounter. Despite this, although it occurs at different times, the events are quite similar but not identical.
- In the series: Dex and Emma meet through a trip to Arthur’s Seat, but as she unexpectedly leaves the day after meeting him, he ends up going after her.

- In the series: There is an event that, for book readers, might have passed unnoticed, and it is the letter Dex writes to Emma in 1990, asking her to stay with him in India.
The Friendship Between Emma and Tilly:
- In the book: Tilly is portrayed as the typical college classmate you wouldn’t expect to meet again after graduation, but as she nearly ruins Dexter and Emma’s date, she decides to join them the day after their romantic outing.
- In the series: The friendship is much simpler and quicker. The two maintain a strong bond, to the point that the protagonist dedicates an emotional speech on the day Tilly marries Graham.
The Protagonist of Emma’s Books:
- In the book: Nisha Halliday is assigned as the protagonist of Emma’s books.
- In the series: The main character in the works of the protagonist is named Julie Criscoll.
Emma’s Parisian Boyfriend:
- In the book: Emma has a Parisian boyfriend, Jean-Pierre. After Dex kisses her, she confesses that she is dating someone and has a date with him but decides to call him and tell him she is sick. He never reaches her apartment, and she falls even more in love with Dex.
- In the series: Dax travels to Paris to see Emma, but she does not mention anything about her boyfriend. The three meet, but Dex ends up leaving the dinner, claiming to be sick. By the time Emma gets home, she confesses her eternal love, and they end up embracing.
Although not significant changes, those who have read the books before watching the miniseries will notice details that have been altered by the streaming platform.
