Sports drama series are becoming increasingly popular, and Netflix has the perfect option to stream this September. “Heels,” one of the most beloved wrestling productions in recent years, is now joining the platform’s catalog, and it’s sure to make waves.

The journey of this title has been anything but easy. Originally airing on Starz in 2021, it enjoyed a highly successful first season, prompting the streamer to produce and release a second. However, just when no one expected it, the show was abruptly canceled, leaving fans frustrated by the brilliant cliffhanger at the end of Season 2.

All seemed lost until Netflix saw potential in the title and decided to revive it by streaming both seasons, reigniting hope for a possible third installment. If you’ve already watched it, you might be wondering how such a high-quality script came to life, and whether it is based on a true story. Here’s what the creators and cast said.

Netflix’s ‘Heels’: Fact or fiction?

“Heels” is set in a small Georgia town, focusing on the relationship between Jack and Ace Spade, the sons of a famous wrestling promoter who passed away, leaving behind the family business. The show follows the tradition of having one character play “the good guy” and the other “the bad guy,” but this dynamic doesn’t hold true outside the ring, where everyone is fighting to survive.

The story is so rich and compelling that many have wondered if it draws from real-life events. While the people that crafted it have confirmed that there isn’t a specific true story behind the series, they did draw from various inspirations. Michael Waldron, the creator, shared his influences:

I grew up a huge fan of the big promotions and would inevitably end up attending smaller events around the South. The level of ambition and love is no different from what you see in Monday Night Raw. These people are as dedicated to their craft as those making millions of dollars, including the wrestlers, their families, and the behind-the-scenes crew.” he explained.

Stephen Amell, who plays Jack Spade, contributed to the production’s authenticity by leveraging his experience as a fan and former professional wrestler. He also consulted with contacts in the wrestling world, such as Cody Rhodes and Kenny Omega, to ensure accurate portrayal: “It was certainly helpful to be able to reach out to people that I’ve met in the world of professional wrestling. Just a laundry list of guys that were very, very helpful.”

The title also employed wrestling consultant Luke Hawx, who worked closely with the cast and crew to ensure that “Heels” accurately depicted the highs and lows of the sport. While it isn’t based on a specific true story, it draws heavily from the real-world dynamics and culture of professional wrestling.
