The studio is pushing forward with another chapter in its long-running aviation saga, confirming that Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

According to Variety, the announcement was made during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, where producer Jerry Bruckheimer was also confirmed to return.

A Third Mission Takes Shape After ‘Maverick’ Success

The new installment builds on the momentum of “Top Gun: Maverick,” the 2022 sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski, which reintroduced Cruise’s veteran pilot to a new generation of audiences.

The film paired legacy storytelling with a younger ensemble, including Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Monica Barbaro, while centering on Maverick’s efforts to train elite graduates for a high-risk mission tied to his past.

Development on a follow-up has been underway for some time. Variety says plans for a third picture first surfaced in 2024, with Ehren Kruger attached to write the screenplay after previously collaborating on “Maverick” alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.

The decision to move ahead is closely tied to the commercial and critical performance of “Maverick.” The film became a defining theatrical success of its release year, earning widespread acclaim and securing multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, while ultimately winning for Best Sound. Its global box office total reached nearly $1.5 billion, marking the highest-grossing release of Cruise’s career.

While specific plot details and a production timeline for “Top Gun 3” remain undisclosed, the returning creative team points to a continuation rather than a reinvention. With Cruise and Bruckheimer back in place, Paramount appears to be leaning on a proven formula as it prepares its next high-altitude entry.
