Speaking while promoting “Toy Story 5,” the actor suggested that the biggest obstacle is not a lack of interest in the idea itself, but the realities surrounding key members of the original cast.
Tim Allen Shares New Update on a Possible ‘Home Improvement’ Revival
More than 25 years after “Home Improvement” ended its eight-season-run on ABC, Allen said discussions about revisiting the sitcom have never completely disappeared. However, he indicated that turning those conversations into an actual production has proven far more complicated than simply securing studio support.
Reflecting on where the project stands, Allen noted that efforts to move forward repeatedly hit the same barrier. “They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck because there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” he said. While he did not elaborate further, he acknowledged that the actors involved “have their own issues.”
Allen has previously expressed interest in a revival centered on the Taylor family years after the original series. That concept remains his preferred approach. “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them,” he said, referring to the three sons of Tim and Jill Taylor who were played by Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith.
The former child stars have taken very different paths since the sitcom concluded in 1999. Thomas stepped away from Hollywood years ago and has largely remained out of the public eye, while Smith left acting altogether and pursued other professional interests. Bryan, meanwhile, has faced a series of highly publicized legal troubles in recent years.
So, Allen stopped short of ruling out a return. He described the situation as “a little challenging right now, to put it mildly,” leaving the door open to the possibility that the project could eventually come together if circumstances change. For now, one of television’s defining family comedies of the 1990s remains a revival idea rather than a confirmed production.
