One Day has become a trend again several years after its release in 2011, and it’s all because Netflix has launched its own version of the movie starring Anne Hathaway, based on David Nicholls‘ contemporary romance novel.
The story revolves around Dexter and Emma, who first meet during their graduation in 1988 and maintain regular contact. The events are set on July 15th, as each year on the same date, they reunite to see where they are in their lives.
Lone Scherfig directed the project, with Jim Sturgess accompanying the actress from “The Devil Wears Prada” as the co-lead, along with Patricia Clarkson and Tom Mison, among other industry stars.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, several of them praised the performances and chemistry between the leads. Anne Hathaway took on the role of Emma, while Jim Sturgess portrayed Dexter.
The plot focuses on the friendship between Emma and Dexter, as well as the complexity of their romantic feelings over the years, and the narrative explores how the choices they make impact their lives and relationships.
How is One Day different from other romantic dramas?
The distinctive feature of One Day is its unique narrative structure, as it follows the main characters during a specific day over several years. This allows the audience to observe how their lives and relationships evolve over time.
The story itself revolves around Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who meet on the day of their university graduation in 1988. After that night, the plot follows their lives, showcasing a segment of their lives on the same day, July 15th, for the next twenty years.
Each segment reveals their ups and downs, challenges, and the different directions they take in life, exploring themes such as friendship, love, and missed opportunities. Although the film did not achieve much success in 2011, it has now become a classic.
