After her last outing in “A Madea Homecoming,” one of comedy’s most beloved matriarchs is back in action. In “Madea’s Destination Wedding,” the iconic character played by Tyler Perry packs her floral dresses as the Simmons family heads to the Bahamas for her grandniece’s wedding.
Just hours away from its official release, the film has already climbed to the top of Netflix USA’s most-watched list according to FlixPatrol. And while “Destination Wedding” is making waves, Perry is already preparing the next installment in the “Madea” universe. This time the story will shift focus to another member of the family.
Joe Takes the Spotlight in the Next Madea Movie
After stirring things up in the Bahamas, Tyler Perry is steering the “Madea” franchise in a new direction with “Joe’s College Road Trip.” While the film remains part of the familiar universe fans know and love, this time it centers on Joe Simmons—Madea’s unfiltered, sharp-tongued brother—who gets his turn in the spotlight. Perry both directs and stars, reprising multiple roles including Joe, Madea herself, and Brian Simmons, Joe’s straight-laced son.

The story follows B.J. Simmons, Brian’s teenage son, as he plans one last road trip with his friends before starting college. But when Brian becomes concerned about the crowd B.J. plans to travel with, he enlists Madea’s help to convince his son to take Grandpa Joe along instead. What begins as a reluctant compromise quickly spirals into an unpredictable and hilarious cross-country journey, with Joe’s outrageous behavior clashing with Gen Z sensibilities at every stop.
Filming took place in early 2024, with production crews spotted in Las Cruces, New Mexico, as well as Memphis, Tennessee, and Clarksdale, Mississippi. Jermaine Harris joins the cast as B.J. Also appearing is Bethany Anne Lind, though her role has yet to be revealed. With a fresh setting, a new lead, and all the family chaos fans expect, “Joe’s College Road Trip” promises to be another wild ride in the “Madea” saga.
