“Uzumaki” has been one of the most anticipated horror anime and now that it has finally emerged from the production limbo it was trapped in for years, it has become a trending show on Max.
The pandemic delayed the HBO project by two years, but Junji Ito‘s creation is now with us, with its first season currently airing. The fourth and final episode is set to be released on October 19.
The show’s four episodes depict a town where the people slowly descend into madness, driven by growing obsessions with spiral shapes: patterns in the clouds, everyday objects, hair, insects and even skin.
Will Uzumaki have a second season in Max?
For now, the adaptation of the famous horror manga by Junji Ito, produced by Adult Swim, will consist of only four episodes. The first season, which began airing on September 28, will conclude on October 20.
No second season has been officially confirmed, and it is expected that this adaptation will conclude with the episodes already planned. The horror anime recently arrived on Max, so HBO has not made any statements about it yet.
Given that this is a very faithful adaptation of the manga, it may remain a limited series unless additional material is created or adapted. However, this seems unlikely until at least October 2024.
Is the series the first adaptation of Uzumaki?
No! The series that arrived on HBO is not the first adaptation of Uzumaki. In the early 2000s, there was a film adaptation. In 2023, also appeared as a segment in the Netflix anthology series Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre.
Despite not being new to the entertainment industry, the TV show has a different production team behind it. The four episodes were directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, with a soundtrack composed by Colin Stetson (Hereditary).
What is Uzumaki about?
The highly anticipated and now acclaimed series consists of four episodes, with its premiere timed to coincide with the Halloween season, capitalizing on the dark and eerie tone of the original story.
The plot follows the inhabitants of a small town called Kurouzu-cho, who suffer from a curse linked to spirals, a symbol that triggers macabre and supernatural events. The manga is known for its surreal and grotesque imagery.
The story explores themes of madness, obsession and the uncanny, as spiral motifs appear in various forms—such as in the clouds, everyday objects and even within the human body—leading to terrifying consequences.
The anime’s visual style aims to replicate the unique and detailed aesthetic of Junji Ito‘s artwork, requiring a high level of technical precision in animation and from the entire production team that brought it to life.
