According to Deadline, HBO has officially commissioned a second installment of the critically acclaimed crime drama, “Task,” confirming that the compelling narrative from creator Brad Ingelsby will continue. The renewal announcement, which came shortly after the successful conclusion of the intense, seven-episode debut season, also confirms the highly anticipated return of star Mark Ruffalo as the deeply conflicted FBI agent Tom Brandis.

The debut season of “Task,” consisting of seven episodes that premiered on September 7, 2025, resonated deeply with both critics and audiences, earning a stellar 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show centers on Agent Brandis, a former Catholic priest with a troubled past, who is charged with leading a task force to dismantle a string of violent robberies against trap houses run by the powerful Dark Hearts motorcycle gang. The series masterfully combined police procedural tension with heavy themes of grief, faith, and family loyalty, embodied by an exceptional ensemble cast including Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu, and Martha Plimpton.

The decision to move forward with another season underscores the show’s success as a major win for the premium cable network. Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, praised the series’ trajectory: “We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week.”

Orsi further highlighted the unique talent of the show’s creator, whose previous work includes the Emmy-winning limited series “Mare of Easttown”: “Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in season two.”

While plot details for the sophomore run are being kept under wraps, the renewal ensures that the compelling world of “Task”—and its deeply flawed, complex characters—will return to HBO screens.
