The premiere of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” on January 18 has sent shockwaves through the television landscape, securing a staggering 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This score cements the series as the highest-rated debut in the history of George R. R. Martin’s televised franchise, surpassing both the original “Game of Thrones” and its predecessor “House of the Dragon.” Created by Martin and Ira Parker, the six-episode first season pivots away from the heavy political machinations of the Iron Throne to focus on a more grounded, emotional narrative.

A New Perspective on the World of Ice and Fire

The series brings to life the beloved “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas, introducing audiences to Peter Claffey as the towering Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his spirited young squire, Egg. This duo offers a refreshing buddy dynamic that critics have hailed as a welcome shift in tone for the franchise. Rather than sprawling armies, the focus remains on Duncan’s struggle as an impoverished hedge knight navigating the social hierarchies of Ashford while forging an unlikely bond with his royal-born companion.

The production value and direction from Owen Harris and Sarah Adina Smith have been praised for capturing a more vibrant, hopeful era of Westeros located ninety years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. Supporting performances from Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor and Finn Bennett as the volatile Aerion Targaryen add layers of classic Targaryen tension without overshadowing the core journey of the protagonists.

While the first season is currently airing its six-episode run, the future of the series is already secure. HBO signaled its immense confidence in the project by renewing it for a second season back in November 2025, months before the pilot even hit screens. Production for the next installment has already moved into the filming phase in Belfast, meaning fans likely won’t have to wait more than a year to see the continuing adventures of the Seven Kingdoms’ most unlikely heroes.
