The post-awards trajectory for “No Other Choice” is now coming into focus. The film, which dominated conversation throughout the season but ultimately fell short at the Academy Awards, is set to reach a broader audience. According to Variety, the title will debut on Hulu on April 24.

A High-Profile Contender Finds Its Streaming Moment

Directed by Park Chan-wook, the movie represents a long-gestating project for the filmmaker, adapting Donald Westlake’s novel “The Ax” into a distinctly Korean setting. The story follows a laid-off paper industry veteran who turns to increasingly extreme measures to secure employment, blending elements of black comedy with psychological thriller.

The title premiered in competition at the Venice International Film Festival, where it drew sustained attention from critics and industry observers. That momentum carried through the season, earning nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category and a lead acting nod for Lee Byung-hun.

Despite that visibility, the production did not secure a nomination at the Academy Awards, even after making the shortlist for Best International Feature. Its absence from the final lineup became one of the more widely noted omissions of the year, particularly given its strong festival reception and commercial performance in South Korea.

Industry observers pointed to a combination of factors behind the outcome, including a crowded international field and the challenges of positioning a picture that shifts between satire and suspense. Campaign strategy and broader industry dynamics also played a role in shaping the awards race, leaving the title on the outside of the final nominations.

With its arrival on streaming, “No Other Choice” is positioned for a different kind of reception, one less tied to awards momentum and more to audience discovery. For a film that sparked conversation across festivals and critics circles, its digital release offers a new phase in its rollout, and a wider platform for viewers who may have missed it the first time around.
