When the live-action “Lilo and Stitch” was first announced, reactions were mixed between skepticism and curiosity. However, once the movie premiered in May, its strong box office performance revealed that audiences remain interested in revisiting beloved stories on the big screen.

Although reviews ranged from mixed to favorable, the movie broke several Memorial Day weekend records and surpassed $1 billion globally. It stands as the second-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the highest-grossing live-action/animated hybrid to date. Following this success, Disney has already announced a streaming release date to bring the picture to a wider audience.

This reimagining of the 2002 animated original sticks closely to the core storyline but introduces a few notable changes that sparked conversation among fans. Once again, Stitch, a genetically engineered alien fugitive, escapes from an intergalactic prison and crash-lands on Earth. There, he’s adopted by Lilo, a lonely Hawaiian girl, and the two form an unlikely bond that helps heal her fractured family.

The film stars Maia Kealoha in her debut as Lilo Pelekai, with original writer-director Chris Sanders returning to voice Stitch. The supporting cast features Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, along with original cast members Amy Hill, Tia Carrere, and Jason Scott Lee in new roles.
