In a recent interview with Variety, the actor was asked directly about rumors that he had already been cast in the HBO crime drama’s upcoming fifth season, which is being developed by Issa López following the success of “Night Country.”

While interest in Cage joining the franchise has circulated for months, the actor made clear that no formal deal is in place. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking,” he said, noting that development on the new season still appears to be in progress.

Cage also admitted that communication around the project has gone quiet recently. “I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” he shared during the interview.

Even so, the actor sounded enthusiastic about the possibility of collaborating with López, whose fourth season became the most watched entry in the anthology’s history. Cage described himself as a fan of the filmmaker, saying he “would be thrilled to work with her,” though he emphasized that “nothing is concrete.”

One of the more surprising revelations from the conversation came when Cage acknowledged he has never actually watched the title’s celebrated debut season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. “I’ve never seen the first season of ‘True Detective,’ but I’ve heard great things,” he said.

The comments arrive as Cage is once again drawing strong reviews for his television work thanks to “Spider-Noir,” the noir inspired Marvel series that premiered today on Prime Video. The show marks the actor’s first leading role in a live action television production and places him in the role of an aging private investigator version of Spider-Man operating in a shadowy 1930s New York City.
