During an interview with ScreenRant for Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars,” Brolin confirmed that “Sicario 3” “is happening” and indicated that work on the film is expected to begin “soon.”

Sicario 3’ Finally Has a Clearer Path Forward

“Sicario 3” has spent years caught in development. The third movie, reportedly titled “Sicario: Capos,” was announced before “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” reached theaters, but the project remained in development for years. Producer Molly Smith said in 2021 that the picture was still being worked on, while later reports pointed to continued progress on the script.

Brolin’s involvement also connects the potential sequel directly to the two entries that came before it. He plays Matt Graver, the CIA officer who works alongside Benicio del Toro‘s Alejandro Gillick in the franchise. Brolin appeared in both “Sicario” and “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” with the latter continuing Graver and Alejandro’s covert operations against Mexican cartels.

The first “Sicario,” released in 2015, established the series as a dark crime thriller centered on the U.S.-Mexico border, with Taylor Sheridan writing the screenplay and Denis Villeneuve directing. The film starred Emily Blunt, del Toro and Brolin, earning three Academy Award nominations and strong reviews for its performances, direction, cinematography and score.

“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”, released in 2018, shifted the focus toward Graver and Alejandro while retaining the morally murky world created by Sheridan. The sequel was also commercially successful, earning $75.8 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $35 million.
