Before he became one of television’s most recognizable faces as Jaime Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s road to fame began in a much more ordinary setting. Long before the armor, royal intrigues and battles of Westeros, the Danish actor spent his first working years picking strawberries…
Why Did Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Work Picking Strawberries Before Becoming an Actor?
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau worked picking strawberries as his first job before pursuing acting, a humble beginning that came years before he became internationally known as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones.
Long before wearing armor in Westeros or walking Hollywood red carpets, the Danish actor spent part of his youth doing seasonal agricultural work, a very different experience from the world of film and television that would later define his career.
Growing up in Denmark, Coster-Waldau followed a path that was far removed from instant fame. His first job was a typical early work experience rather than a step toward celebrity, but it became one of the most unusual details attached to his biography because of the contrast between those days in the fields and his eventual rise as one of television’s biggest stars.
The strawberry-picking job also reflects the period before Coster-Waldau committed fully to acting. After those early years, he studied at the Danish National School of Theatre, where he developed the skills that would launch his professional career.
His first major breakthrough came with the Danish thriller Nightwatch (Nattevagten) in 1994, which opened the door to more ambitious projects and eventually international opportunities.
Years later, the contrast between his first paycheck and his global success became part of the actor’s unique story: a performer who went from a seasonal farm job in Denmark to major Hollywood productions and, ultimately, one of HBO’s most memorable characters.
His portrayal of Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones transformed him into a worldwide name, but his journey started with a much simpler chapter far away from the spotlight.
