Speaking with Gold Derby, Howell offered an early glimpse at what lies ahead for the young doctor, while stopping short of revealing major plot details. The actor indicated that the creative team is gradually sharing information as new scripts arrive, but suggested that viewers can expect a more personal journey for Whitaker in the upcoming season.

Howell revealed that the series appears ready to spend more time exploring the experiences that shaped Whitaker before he arrived at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

“It’s all trickling in very slowly. We’re just getting scripts and having conversations with the writers,” Howell said, adding, “So I can’t spoil anything, but it’s all good stuff.”

The actor’s comments point toward a shift in focus for a character who has steadily grown from an uncertain medical student into one of the emergency department’s most dependable young physicians. Over the first two seasons, Whitaker’s resilience, compassion and work ethic made him a standout member of the ensemble, even as much of his personal history remained in the background.

That may be changing. Howell revealed that upcoming episodes could place greater emphasis on the life Whitaker knew before pursuing medicine. “I’m excited what they have in store for Whitaker,” he said. “It seems to be bringing a bit more of his backstory into the forefront, where he’s came from, what he’s left behind.”

Whitaker grew up in rural Nebraska and became the first member of his family to attend college and medical school. The show has also hinted at financial struggles, homesickness and complicated family dynamics, threads that have largely remained secondary to the fast paced demands of the emergency room.

For Howell, those elements appear poised to play a larger role moving forward. “Those aspects are starting to creep back into his shift this time,” he said. “So I’m excited.”

Created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells and Noah Wyle, “The Pitt” has earned widespread praise for its realistic portrayal of emergency medicine and became one of television’s most decorated dramas. HBO Max renewed the series for a third season ahead of the Season 2 premiere, ensuring that viewers will get another chance to follow Whitaker and the rest of the Pitt staff through the pressures of a new shift.
