The Odyssey’ Continues Its Record-Breaking Run

Released in theaters on July 17, “The Odyssey” brings Homer’s ancient Greek epic to the big screen through Nolan’s large-scale interpretation. The story follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he attempts to make his way home to Ithaca following the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures and supernatural forces along the way.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and Charlize Theron as Calypso. The cast also includes Samantha Morton, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page and Benny Safdie.

Nolan approached the project as a grounded interpretation of Greek mythology, drawing from several translations of Homer’s poem as well as pictures such as “Andrei Rublev” and “Ran.” The production had an estimated $250 million budget and was filmed across several countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland and Scotland.

With its latest box office milestone, “The Odyssey” has also become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie and the second-highest-grossing movie released in 2026 so far.
