Why Robin Williams Walked Away From Disney After ‘Aladdin’
Williams agreed to play the Genie in 1992 for a fraction of his usual salary, reportedly accepting Screen Actors Guild scale pay because he wanted to contribute to Disney’s tradition of animated classics and create a character his children could enjoy. In return, he requested that his voice not be used to sell merchandise and that the Genie would not dominate the film’s advertising campaign.

Those conditions soon became the center of a dispute. As “Aladdin” turned into a box office phenomenon, Disney prominently featured the Genie in its marketing and commercial tie-ins. Feeling that the agreement had not been honored, Williams decided he would no longer work with the studio. As a result, he did not reprise the role in “The Return of Jafar” or the “Aladdin” television series, where Dan Castellaneta took over as the Genie’s voice.
The relationship eventually changed after Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney and Joe Roth became the studio’s new chairman. Roth publicly apologized to Williams, acknowledging the dispute, while Disney also reportedly presented the actor with a Pablo Picasso painting as part of the reconciliation. The apology paved the way for Williams’ return in “Aladdin and the King of Thieves,” restoring the original voice of one of the studio’s most recognizable animated characters.
Released in 1992, “Aladdin” became both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $500 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year.
