The possibility of a third trip to the sun-drenched Greek island for the “Mamma Mia!” franchise has movie and music fans buzzing, and the film’s star, Amanda Seyfried, is adding to the excitement with her personal casting suggestions.

Already a vocal proponent of having pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter join the fun, Seyfried recently expanded her dream cast list, proposing that “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You” star Sydney Sweeney also be recruited for the potential sequel. Her enthusiastic vision for the next chapter has put two of Hollywood’s most talked-about young actresses at the center of the “Mamma Mia 3” conversation.

Seyfried’s Vision for ‘Mamma Mia 3’ and the Road Ahead

Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sophie in the beloved musical series, recently offered an enthusiastic glimpse into her perfect scenario for a third film during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Seyfried envisions “Mamma Mia 3” catching up with her character in the present day, with Sophie now embracing motherhood.

Speaking about this idea, Seyfried said, “I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids.” She then proposed a way to integrate the young stars: “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

Her enthusiastic vision for the sequel prioritizes the fun and fundamental chaos that has defined the previous films. She confirmed her belief that the original trio of potential fathers must return, underscoring that the mystery of Sophie’s parentage would rightfully remain unsolved. “I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter,” Seyfried added.

On a more poignant note, the actress expects Meryl Streep’s character, Donna, to feature as a ghost: “Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.”

The idea of a third installment has long been nurtured by the franchise’s producer, Judy Craymer. Back in June 2020, Craymer formally announced that a third film was indeed in development, with plans to potentially incorporate some of the new songs ABBA created for their Voyage reunion album, which was eventually released in November 2021.

However, the project’s development has been far from smooth, initially encountering delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, ABBA band member Benny Andersson expressed significant skepticism in May 2023, describing the sequel as “wishful thinking” and saying he would only support it if “substantial changes” were made. Despite these creative hurdles, Craymer reaffirmed her dedication in October 2023, confidently stating that a third film “will happen.”
