After nearly four years of solo ventures and mandatory military service, the seven members of BTS have reunited to deliver ARIRANG, a 14-track studio album that blends traditional Korean heritage with cutting-edge global production.
Named after Korea’s unofficial national anthem, the record serves as a profound statement on resilience, identity, and the unbreakable bond between the septet and their global audience. From historic performances at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square to a star-studded collaborator list, this comeback is more than just a musical release—it is a cultural milestone.

The decision to name the album ARIRANG is a deliberate nod to the traditional Korean folk song that represents themes of longing, separation, and eventual reunion. By centering the project on this cultural touchstone, the group is signaling a homecoming following their time apart in the military.
The first full-group project since 2022
This release marks the official end of “Chapter 2,” the period where members focused on individual solo albums like Golden and Indigo. ARIRANG is the first time RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook have recorded together as a full unit since the anthology album Proof.
High-profile global production credits
The album features an eclectic mix of international heavyweights, including Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Ryan Tedder, and Diplo. These collaborations have resulted in a diverse sonic palette, ranging from the psychedelic synth-pop of “Merry Go Round” to the heavy trap beats of “Aliens.”
RM’s extensive creative leadership
True to his role as the group’s leader, RM holds songwriting and production credits on 13 of the 14 tracks. His lyrical fingerprints are visible throughout the album’s narrative, which focuses on the transition from youth into a more seasoned, reflective maturity.
The cinematic “Swim” music video
The lead single, “Swim,” was released alongside a visually stunning music video directed by Tanu Muino and featuring American actress Lili Reinhart. Fans have praised the video for its intricate metaphors, including a mysterious ship that many interpret as a symbol for the group’s journey through fame. It quickly shattered records, becoming the most-viewed music video in a 24-hour period for 2026.

To commemorate the launch, BTS performed a massive free concert at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on March 21. This location is a historic landmark of Korean heritage, and the event was streamed globally on Netflix to reach millions of fans simultaneously.
Sampling National Treasure No. 29
One of the most unique tracks on the record is the interlude titled “No. 29,” which features the actual sound of the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok. By incorporating the tolling of this 8th-century bell—South Korea’s 29th national treasure—BTS bridges the gap between ancient history and modern pop.
Record-breaking physical editions and vinyl
The rollout included an unprecedented array of physical formats, featuring member-specific vinyl colors like “V Velvet Red” and “Jin Pink.” These collectibles sold out within minutes of the pre-order launch, reaffirming the massive purchasing power of the group’s dedicated fanbase.
Critical acclaim and polarising reviews
While the album debuted with a high Metacritic score of 89, it has also sparked intense debate among music critics for its experimental shifts. Outlets like Rolling Stone have hailed it as a masterpiece of alt-pop architecture, whereas more traditional critics were surprised by the experimentation in tracks like “Hooligan.”
