Almost fifty years after “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” dominated awards season and became a cultural landmark, the story is being revisited in a brand new form. A spinoff series is in the works, and this time, it shifts the focus to a character who saw everything but said very little.

According to Deadline, the project is being developed by a key figure tied to the original film, and the new show will explore the world of “Cuckoo’s Nest” from a very different perspective.

TV Adaptation of ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ Will Follow Chief Bromden

A new television series based on “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is officially in development. The project will take a fresh approach by returning to the perspective found in the original novel by Ken Kesey. Rather than revisit the story from the eyes of Randle McMurphy, this adaptation will place Chief Bromden at the center.

Producer Paul Zaentz shared the news during an appearance on the indie film podcast CK Café. Zaentz, the nephew of original producer Saul Zaentz, confirmed that he has reached an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to move forward with the series. The first installment will follow Chief Bromden’s point of view inside the psychiatric hospital, and future episodes may explore what becomes of him after his escape. There is no word yet on which studio will produce the project or who is writing the script.

Zaentz hinted at the opportunity for deeper character exploration in a long-form format but expressed caution when it comes to remaking classic stories. According to him, television offers the chance to revisit familiar material in a way that respects its depth rather than replicating it.

So, this project wants to offer a fresh and meaningful perspective on a classic story, shining light on Chief Bromden’s experience. With growing awareness around mental health, revisiting his journey feels timely and important.
