Over the years and seasons, Game of Thrones has become one of the most iconic series, not only for HBO but for television in general, establishing itself as a cultural phenomenon worldwide.
Known for its high-quality production, impressive special effects, and intricate narrative, it set new standards for TV shows in terms of scale and ambition, along with the level of fandom it achieved.
Breaking audience records multiple times for Max, being one of the most-watched series in the platform’s history, its success led to the production of multiple spin-offs, such as House of the Dragon and others yet to come.
John Snow series with Kit Harington
The character of Jon Snow has become so popular and gained so much significance within the series that a few years ago, the arrival of his own spin-off was confirmed, which will bring back Kit Harington as the leader of the Night’s Watch.
Titled “Snow“, the show will explore what happened to him after the events of Game of Thrones (after he killed Daenerys Targaryen, who was one of his loves). This will be the only spin-off that will not be based on preexisting material.
Therefore, the author of the original books, George R. R. Martin, will have to come up with a new story for the audience’s favorite character. In 2020, the actor spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Jon’s future, saying:
“The fact that he’s gone to the Wall in the end, back to the Black, is a great twist and ending for him. He’s done with all that, he’s killed Dany and then headed back to the Wall. In the original pilot, none of us were sure we were going to get picked up, but that’s the way he ended it.
He came back to the Wall, and it ended with him going off with the Free Folk. But if you remember back to the very first time he went to the Wall, he was always in service of not himself but of the people, of the realm.
He would’ve been happiest in the North, with those Free Folk, just going off with them and leaving it all behind. It’s a really sweet ending. And it’s in the piece. It was in there from the second draft, I think. It was always his destiny“.
Series based on Aegon’s Conquest
After the success of HOTD, it was reported that Aegon Targaryen would have his own series, where they would develop the conquest of Westeros. Mattson Tomlin, who also worked on The Batman Part II, would be in charge of the spin-off, which still does not have a fixed title.
The screenwriter, director, and producer will be adapting the story of Aegon’s brutal conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, as written by the book author in the first half of Fire & Blood.
Business Insider confirmed that it would be a prequel and would follow the events of House of the Dragon, depicting how Aegon successfully unified all the realms, along with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons, in just two years.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will be based on George R. R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg and is one of the most active projects within HBO’s panel. The plot will take place almost a century before the events of Game of Thrones and will focus on Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon V Targaryen.
“If you don’t know the characters, Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom. Laverne & Shirley. Abbott & Costello. Beavis & Butthead. So, no. We want ‘knight’ in the title. Knight and knighthood are crucial to the themes of these stories”, the author posted.
Nine Voyages
In early 2021, Deadline confirmed that HBO is developing a series about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, also known as The Sea Snake. The spin-off is taking its time, as creating a new show that connects with what has been seen before and maintains the same quality as previous productions is a significant task.
The character was introduced in the first season of House of the Dragon and was portrayed by Steve Toussaint. However, it is believed that he will not be the protagonist of the series since it will be a prequel, depicting a much younger version of Corlys, showcasing his maritime travels to Pentos, Dragonstone, and Westeros.
The actor discussed his potential involvement in the series during an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022, expressing his enthusiasm to participate, even if only in a brief scene. “If I’m lucky, I might say to them, ‘Let me just sit at the beginning [of the show] with a book and say, ‘Let me talk about my life'”, he said.
Despite all his efforts, the author of the original saga confessed that the series will not be a live-action but will take place in animated format. This is due to budgetary limitations that make a live-action adaptation relatively more expensive.
Season 2 of House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon was the first spin-off that arrived after Game of Thrones concluded its eighth season in 2019. Not only did it become one of HBO’s most popular titles, but it also became as iconic as its predecessor.
Its first season aired in 2022, and shortly after it concluded, it was confirmed that the characters would be back for a second installment. The premiere episode set viewership records and garnered eight Emmy nominations, so a renewal was expected.
The upcoming season is expected to focus on the thick of the war. Showrunner Ryan Condal spoke with EW about the story and assured that the early episodes were just “setting the table for a very bloody feast to come”, according to Fotogramas.
“The reason I really wanted to spend our time doing this is that I wanted everybody to understand who all these characters were and the long history that they had behind them, behind their parents and their grandparents, that led us to this point, where they end up fighting a civil war against each other”, he later added.
10,000 Ships
The arrival of 10,000 Ships has not been confirmed yet, but it has been brought to the table. Several HBO team members revealed that they are considering bringing to life a series that would be linked with another project titled Flea Bottom, set in the poorest slum of King’s Landing.
According to Business Insider and The New York Times, Martin reportedly stated that the show would be set “like a thousand years before” the original material, describing it as an “Odyssey-type epic“.
The episodes would tell the story of the warrior queen known as Princess Nymeria and the surviving Rhoynars, who traveled from Essos to Dorne after their defeat against Valyria and its dragons.
