After nearly three decades of dominating the realm of video games, Sonic The Hedgehog made a leap onto the big screen in 2020, enjoying massive success at the box office. The momentum persisted, and today, Paramount+ has released the “Knuckles” series, which has debuted strongly in the US top 10.
Its first season consists of six episodes already available for streaming, each packed with equal parts action and comedy. Idris Elba leads as the voice of Knuckles, joined in his adventure on earth by co-star Adam Pally.
While the spin-off focuses on the red echidna, it also includes cameos from Sonic and Tails. Additionally, other supporting characters from the “Sonic The Hedgehog” movies make appearances, along with additions from “Sonic Adventure”, one of the first Sonic video games.
Knuckles is the most-watched series on Paramount+ US
Throughout the years, Sonic and his friends have amassed an astronomical number of fans worldwide. This overwhelming support is evident in the immediate success of “Knuckles”, which became the No. 1 series on Paramount+ US just a few hours after its release.
The plot unfolds between the events of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” which is set to hit theaters on December 20. Having recently saved the earth with his friends, Knuckles embarks on a journey to transform sheriff Wade Whipple into a formidable warrior. Together, they will have to fight against unexpected adversaries.
Naturally, fans are curious if the franchise’s greatest archenemy, Robotnik, makes an appearance in “Knuckles”. The answer? Not directly, but the series introduces numerous characters affiliated with him who share the same desire of stealing the echidna’s power.
Will Knuckles have a second season?
While Paramount+ has labeled the Knuckles series as a limited event, hopes for a continuation remain high, especially given the remarkable numbers the production has achieved on the platform the day of its premiere.
An interview with Idris Elba by The New York Times in 2022 may give us an important clue about a possible second season. During the conversation, he reflected on signing a contract for just one film when offered the role of Knuckles in “Sonic The Hedgehog 2”:
“I thought I was just doing one movie. But now, the fact that I can probably get to play more Knuckles and maybe even spin off into his own world is great”.
Given Paramount+’s track record of extending the Sonic franchise due to its success, it’s reasonable to speculate that a second season of “Knuckles” might already be in the works.
